Teaching maths to a child with dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty affecting number sense: the intuitive grasp of quantity that most people develop without instruction. It is not the same as being behind in maths, and it is not maths anxiety, though it commonly causes it.
What it looks like
- Difficulty subitising. Not being able to see that four objects are four without counting them one by one.
- Counting on fingers well past the age peers stop, for calculations that should be automatic.
- Trouble estimating. No sense of whether an answer is roughly right, so an absurd answer does not feel wrong.
- Difficulty with sequences, place value and the direction of number lines.
- Facts that do not stick despite genuine practice, then disappear again after a break.
What actually helps
The general principle is that quantity has to be made visible and physical for much longer than the usual curriculum allows, because the intuition that normally underpins abstract symbols is not there yet.
- Use concrete objects for far longer than feels age-appropriate. Cubes, counters, rods, money, anything countable.
- Then move to pictures of quantity, then to symbols. Do not skip the middle stage, it is where the connection forms.
- Build estimation deliberately, as its own skill. Is this answer sensible? Roughly how many?
- Work on number bonds and place value until they are genuinely secure, even if it takes years. Everything later rests on them.
- Allow calculators and reference charts for the parts that are not the current focus, so a recall problem does not block a reasoning task.
A child with dyscalculia can be a strong mathematical reasoner. Reasoning and number fact recall are different capacities, and conflating them causes bright children to be written off in maths.
Managing the anxiety on top
Most dyscalculic children arrive with maths anxiety on top of the underlying difficulty, because they have usually experienced years of being slower and being noticed for it. The anxiety alone reduces working memory, so it makes the maths harder in its own right.
Remove time pressure, remove public performance, and separate practice from assessment entirely. Progress here is slow, and it is much slower if every session feels like a test.

For work where calculation is not the skill being practised, yes. Blocking a calculator during a reasoning task means testing recall instead of the reasoning you meant to develop.
