Is AI safe for children to learn with?
This deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance, so here are the actual risks, including the ones that apply to our own app.
Risk one: it can be confidently wrong
This is the big one and it is inherent to the technology. Language models generate plausible text. Plausible and correct overlap most of the time, and the gap is where the problem lives.
It matters more for children than adults, because a child usually cannot tell. An adult reading a wrong fact about their own field spots it. A ten year old learning about the water cycle has no way to check.
It gets worse the more niche the topic. On mainstream school content, models are reliable. On obscure subjects, they fabricate more, and they do it in the same confident tone.
Risk two: data
Ask what happens to what your child types. Is it stored, who can see it, is it used to train future models, where is it processed, and can you delete it. Free tools in particular are worth scrutinising, since the business model has to be somewhere.
Risk three: content
General purpose chatbots are not built for children. Filtering varies, and a general assistant will discuss things you would not choose for a nine year old. A tool built for children should have filtering, age awareness and parental visibility.
Risk four: dependence
A tool that hands over answers produces a child who can obtain answers, not one who can work things out. The distinction between explaining and answering is worth watching for directly.
What to check before you let a child use one
- Can you see what your child asked and what it said? Parental visibility is the single most useful safeguard.
- What does it do about accuracy in maths and science, where wrong answers do lasting damage?
- Is content filtering built in and age aware?
- What is the data policy, in plain terms?
- Does it explain, or does it just answer?
No AI tutor is accurate all the time. Any provider telling you theirs is either misunderstands the technology or is misrepresenting it.

Common questions
What age is appropriate for an AI tutor?
It depends more on supervision than age. Younger children should use it alongside an adult. From around nine or ten, more independent use is reasonable with a parent reviewing conversations. Any age can benefit from the read-aloud and explanation functions with an adult present.
Will it replace me teaching my child?
No, and a tool that claims it will is overselling. It is good at explaining, practising, answering the fifteenth follow-up question and being infinitely patient. It cannot judge what your child actually needs, notice they are having a bad day, or decide what matters.
