Setting up a sensory friendly learning space at home
Sensory load is invisible and cumulative. A child managing uncomfortable input has less capacity left for thinking, and it shows up as inattention, irritability or refusal rather than as discomfort, because most children cannot identify the cause.
Light
- Natural light where possible. Position work so the light comes from the side rather than behind a screen.
- Avoid overhead fluorescent and cheap LED. Flicker that most adults cannot consciously see is exhausting for many autistic people.
- Offer dimmer options. Lamps rather than a single bright ceiling light.
- Try coloured overlays or off-white paper for reading. It helps some children considerably, particularly those reporting visual stress.
Sound
Background noise is the most common unrecognised barrier. Fridges, extractor fans, traffic, other children, a television two rooms away.
- Ear defenders or noise cancelling headphones, available without asking.
- Music or white noise for children who focus better with predictable sound covering unpredictable sound.
- Soft furnishing to reduce echo. Hard kitchens are acoustically harsh.
- Consider when as well as where. The house at 8am and the house at 4pm are different environments.
Seating and position
Sitting still at a table is a convention, not a requirement for learning. Many children think better moving or in unconventional positions.
Offer a floor option, a standing option, a wobble cushion or a chair that allows movement, and let them lie down to read. Judge by the work produced rather than by whether it looks like a classroom.
The kitchen table is often the worst spot in the house: bright overhead light, hard echoing surfaces, food smells, and constant interruption. It is the default because it is convenient for adults.
Reduce visual clutter
Busy walls, piles of resources and visible mess all compete for attention. A plain wall in front of the working position helps more than a colourful display, despite what classroom decoration suggests.
Keep the actual working surface clear of everything except the current task. For children who are easily pulled off task, out of sight genuinely helps.

No. A corner that is set up well and consistently available works better than a whole room that is shared, cluttered or noisy. The consistency matters more than the space.
My child wants to work in a den or under a table. Is that a problem?
