How to build a home education curriculum around your child’s special interest

Every home-educating parent has been told to 'use their interests'. Almost nobody explains how you get from a child who will talk about sharks for four hours to something you could show an inspector as maths, literacy and science.

Here is the method that actually works, and the point where most people go wrong.

Start with the interest, not the subject list

The instinct is to take the national curriculum and look for shark-shaped holes to pour the interest into. That produces the worksheet every child sees straight through: a page of sums that happens to mention sharks. The interest is decoration, the maths is the same maths, and the child knows it.

Flip it. Start with what is genuinely interesting about the topic, then notice which real skills it needs. Sharks are not a maths theme. But shark depth ranges are negative numbers, bite force is units and comparison, population decline is percentages and graphs, and migration is distance, speed and time across a world map.

That maths is not decorated with sharks. It is the maths you need to answer a shark question. The difference is everything.

The four-question test

Take any interest and ask these four questions. Each one tends to open a different subject area.

  1. How big, how far, how many, how fast? This is your maths. Measurement, number, data, scale, sometimes geometry.
  2. How does it work, and why? This is your science. Mechanism, cause and effect, classification, systems.
  3. Where did it come from, and who was involved? This is your history, geography and culture.
  4. Can you explain it to someone else? This is your literacy. Writing, structuring, arguing, presenting.

Run those four questions against almost any interest and you will have more material than you can teach in a term. Minecraft: volume and area, redstone logic and circuits, the history of construction and settlement, and a written build guide. Horses: feed weights and costs, anatomy and gait, domestication and the history of agriculture, and a care manual.

Where to add structure, and where to leave it alone

An interest-led curriculum still needs a spine, or you drift for six weeks and cannot say what was learned. But structure belongs in different places for different children.

The commonest failure is not lack of structure. It is building a beautiful twelve-week plan around an interest that lasts nine days. Build in the assumption that the interest will move.

When the interest changes halfway through

It will. This is not a discipline problem or a sign that you chose wrong. Intense, moving interests are how a lot of children, particularly autistic and ADHD children, are built.

This is exactly why you structure skills rather than topics. If your plan says 'sharks', a pivot to Ancient Egypt throws the whole plan away. If your plan says 'negative numbers, percentages, a written explanation and reading a graph', then Egypt carries all four: dates before and after year zero, proportions of a pyramid, an explanation of mummification, and a graph of Nile flood levels. The vehicle changed, the learning did not.

Keep a note of what was actually covered as you go, not at the end of term. Reconstructing a term from memory in one sitting is where record-keeping becomes miserable.

Common questions

Is interest-led learning enough on its own?

For most primary-age children, yes, provided you track skills rather than topics. Older children working towards formal exams usually need a specification-shaped layer alongside it, because exam boards test a fixed list. Interest-led work covers the understanding, the specification covers the gaps.

What if my child has no strong interests?

Then use questions instead. Keep a note of anything they ask out loud for a fortnight. That list is your curriculum. Children with no single obsession usually have wide, shifting curiosity, which is easier to build from than it looks.

What if the interest is something I know nothing about?

That is an advantage. A child explaining something to an adult who genuinely does not know it is doing real work: sequencing, vocabulary, checking their own understanding. You do not need to be the expert, you need to be the audience.
