Teaching a child who is years ahead in one subject and behind in another
Plenty of children are not one 'level'. They read years above their age and cannot write a paragraph. They do algebra in their head and cannot remember times tables. This is a spiky profile, and it is extremely common among neurodivergent learners.
Why school struggles with this and you do not have to
A classroom has to group by age because there are thirty children and one teacher. Everything gets aimed at the middle. A spiky child is bored and lost in the same hour, in different subjects, and often ends up labelled as not trying.
At home you are not bound by that. You can teach each subject at the level the child is actually at. That single change resolves a surprising amount of what looked like behaviour.
Separate the skill from the vehicle
The trap with an advanced reader who cannot write is handing them material that matches their reading age and expects writing to match. They fail, and conclude they are stupid, despite being ahead.
- Feed the strength at full strength. An advanced reader should read hard books. Do not hold the reading back to match the writing.
- Work the weakness at its real level, separately and without shame. Paragraph structure at the level they are actually at, not the level their reading implies.
- Do not let the weakness gate the strength. Requiring a written essay to prove they understood a hard book means they stop reading hard books.
- Use scribing and voice while the weak skill catches up. Composing and handwriting are different skills and can be practised apart.
A child who is ahead in something is not 'fine'. Advanced in one area and struggling in another is one of the most frustrating experiences a child can have, and it is frequently mistaken for laziness.
The gap you must not skip
Being ahead conceptually does not mean the foundations are there. A child who reasons brilliantly about algebra but has never secured number bonds will hit a wall later, and it will look sudden when it was not.
Fill genuine gaps, but fill them honestly: at speed, without making a bright child sit through weeks of material they mostly know to reach the three things they missed. Diagnose precisely, teach the gap, move on.

Should I move them up a year in their strong subject?

Is a spiky profile a sign of something?
It can be associated with autism, ADHD, dyslexia or dyspraxia, but plenty of children are simply uneven. If the gap is large, persistent or causing distress, it is worth discussing with a professional, though it does not need a diagnosis to be worth teaching around.
