How to use AI without it doing your child’s work for them
The reasonable worry about AI in education is not that children will be misinformed. It is that they will stop thinking, because something else will do it faster.
Answering and explaining are different things
'What is 7 times 8' gets an answer and teaches nothing. 'I keep forgetting 7 times 8, how can I remember it' gets a method. Same subject, entirely different outcome.
The skill worth teaching is asking the second kind of question, and it does not develop on its own. Children default to asking for the answer because it works.
How to set it up
- Require an attempt first. They try, then ask about where they got stuck. This alone changes most of the dynamic.
- Teach them to ask for a hint rather than an answer. Explicitly, as a phrase they use.
- Have them explain the answer back afterwards. If they cannot, they did not learn it, and they will notice that themselves.
- Use it to check work rather than produce it. Doing then verifying is a different activity from asking then copying.
- Ask it for more questions of the same type, then do those unaided.
The dependence question is not how much they use it, but what happens when it is not there. A child who cannot start anything alone has a problem regardless of how good the tool is.
Warning signs
- Work is markedly better than the same child produces unaided.
- They cannot explain their own answer.
- Distress rather than problem solving when the tool is unavailable.
- No visible attempt before asking, every time.
- Vocabulary in written work they do not use or understand in speech.
Where AI genuinely helps thinking
Used well it does the opposite of replacing thought. Being able to ask the fifth follow-up question without embarrassment, or to have something explained a fourth different way, supports understanding in a way a busy classroom cannot.
It is also a good interlocutor for a child who wants to argue a position, test an idea, or be asked questions about something they are trying to understand.

Should I ban it for homework?
Banning tends to move usage out of sight rather than stopping it. Setting expectations about how it is used, and being able to see the conversations, works better in practice.
How do I know if they actually understand?
Ask them to explain it to you, or to teach it to a sibling. Explaining is difficult to fake and it is also excellent consolidation, so it is worth doing regardless.
