Cheap and free home education resources that are actually good
Home education costs a family income, or it costs almost nothing, depending entirely on choices made in the first six months. The expensive version is not better. It is usually just newer.
What you can get for nothing
- Library membership. Reservations, interlibrary loans, ebook and audiobook apps, and often free access to reference databases. This is the biggest single free resource in home education and it is chronically underused.
- Khan Academy: free maths and science instruction, sequenced, with practice.
- BBC Bitesize: free, UK curriculum shaped, good for a quick explanation. UK only.
- Museum and heritage learning pages, many with downloadable teaching packs and activity sheets.
- Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and LibriVox for free books and free audiobooks.
- Second hand curriculum groups, where the boxed set someone abandoned in week five goes for a third of the price.
The trap in free worksheet sites
Free printable sites are the obvious answer and they work until you need something specific. Then you spend forty minutes hunting for fractions practice pitched at the right level, on a topic your child will tolerate, and print something close enough that lands badly. Watch the answer keys too. A surprising number of free and AI-generated worksheet sites contain wrong answers, and a wrong answer learned as right is more expensive to undo than the sheet was to download.
Things worth paying for, eventually
- Exam entry fees, if your teenager sits GCSEs or IGCSEs as a private candidate. Book early, centres are limited.
- A human tutor for the last stretch of one or two exam subjects nobody in the house knows.
- Anything that saves you hours every week, if hours are the thing you are shortest of.
- Consumables for practical work. Science kit and art materials get used up and are hard to fake.
Things to stop paying for
Boxed curricula bought before you know your child at home. Subscription sites you signed up to in a panic and use twice a month. Anything bought because a group online said it was essential, which is usually a statement about that family rather than about yours.
If money is genuinely tight, spend it on maths and reading and let everything else run on free material. Those two gate later learning. History does not.

Common questions
Can you home educate for free?
Yes, and plenty of families do, particularly at primary age. A library card, free online instruction for maths, and a lot of your own time will cover it. The costs that are hard to avoid come later: exam fees, and sometimes a tutor for a subject nobody at home can teach.
Are free printable worksheets good enough?
For topping up practice on something your child is already secure in, often yes. The weakness is fit and accuracy: you get the sheet that exists rather than the one you need, and answer keys on free and auto-generated sites are not always right.
Is there any financial help for home educators in the UK?
There is no general funding for home educating families in England, and school funding does not follow the child. Some local authorities offer limited exam support and some charities help with specific costs, but assume nothing and check locally.
