Home educating a gifted child, or one who was simply bored at school

Plenty of children come out of school not because they were struggling, but because they had finished the work by ten past nine and spent the rest of the day being told to wait quietly. That is a real problem and it does real damage, mostly by teaching a child that effort is unnecessary. The habit of not needing to try is a difficult one to unlearn at fifteen.

Deeper is usually better than faster

The obvious move is to accelerate: hand them the next year’s material and keep going. That works for a while and then produces a thirteen year old who has finished A level maths and has nowhere to go, and who still cannot cope with being stuck. Depth is often the better spend. Harder problems at the same level, unusual angles, proof rather than procedure, primary sources rather than textbooks, real projects with real constraints. A child who can already do the operation learns more from a problem that resists them than from ten more of the ones they can already do.

Check the foundations honestly

Being ahead conceptually does not mean the basics are secure. A child who reasons brilliantly about algebra but never secured number bonds hits a wall later, and it looks sudden when it was not. Fill genuine gaps, but fill them at speed. Do not make a quick child sit through six weeks of material they mostly know in order to reach the three things they actually missed. Diagnose precisely, teach the gap, move on.

The perfectionism problem

A child who has always found things easy often has no experience of sustained difficulty, and reads the first genuine struggle as evidence they were never clever after all. This is where bright children stop trying, and it usually happens the first time something is hard.

Gifted and uneven are not opposites. A child reading at fifteen-year-old level and writing at seven-year-old level is extremely common, and being ahead in one place makes the gap in the other feel worse rather than better.

Asynchrony and the social question

A ten year old who thinks like a fifteen year old is still ten emotionally, and pushing them into older company academically does not change that. Home education handles this well because you can pitch each subject where it belongs without moving the whole child up a year.

Common questions

Should I move my child up a year?

At home, year groups are not doing anything for you, so there is nothing to move up. Teach each subject at the level they are at. The only place the label matters is formal exams, and those are entered by readiness rather than age.

Can a home educated child sit exams early?

Yes, as a private candidate, though centres for private candidates are limited so book early. Weigh it carefully: an early GCSE has value, but so does another year of depth, and there is rarely a prize for finishing first.

What if my child is only ahead in one subject?

That is the normal case rather than the exception. Teach that subject where they are and everything else where it is. The failure mode is letting a strength gate a weakness, for example demanding a written essay to prove they understood a hard book, which just stops them reading hard books.
