Languages, coding, music and art at home
These are the subjects that get called extras, then quietly disappear from the week. They are also, in most families' actual experience, the ones a child remembers a decade later.
Languages
A language needs frequency far more than duration. Ten minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday, and the gap between the two is not close.
- Start with sound and meaning, not grammar tables. A child who can understand simple spoken sentences has something to attach grammar to later.
- Use the language for something real: a recipe, a cartoon, a song, a game, a message to a relative.
- Apps are good at vocabulary and streaks and bad at production. Pair one with anything that makes your child speak or write.
- A conversation partner, even once a fortnight, changes the trajectory more than any resource.
- If exams are the goal, get the specification early. Language exams have specific topic vocabulary lists and a speaking component that needs rehearsing with a person.
Coding
The usual failure in home coding is finishing tutorials forever without ever building anything. Tutorials teach syntax, projects teach programming, and only one of those transfers.
- Start with a block language such as Scratch for younger children, which removes typing and syntax errors from the equation.
- Move to a text language, usually Python, when they are frustrated by what blocks cannot do rather than at a fixed age.
- Build something they actually want to exist, however small and however badly. A game, a bot, a calculator, a thing that annoys their sibling.
- Let them get stuck and debug it. Debugging is the actual skill and it is the part tutorials skip.
Music and art
Home education is unusually good for instrumental practice, because you can do ten minutes daily at whatever hour suits, and because a child who is not exhausted by six hours of school has something left to give it. The honest hard part is that practice is a habit rather than a decision, and it needs protecting on bad days like reading does. Graded exams give useful external structure if your child responds to that, and are a genuine external qualification worth listing on any record.
Art at home tends to mean making things, which is good, and rarely means looking at things, which is a loss. Looking properly at a painting and saying what is happening in it is a skill, and it is the same skill as reading a source in history. Teach some technique too, because children who are never taught how to draw what they see usually conclude at nine or ten that they cannot draw, and stop.
These subjects survive best when they are on the timetable rather than in the gaps. Anything scheduled for when there is time left over does not happen, because there is never time left over.

Common questions
Which language should we learn?
The one somebody in your life speaks, or the one your child has a reason to want. Motivation beats strategic value at this age, and a child who loves a language will get further in it than one doing the useful one under duress. If exams are the aim, check which languages your likely exam centre actually offers.
Do I need to know how to code to teach it?
No, and there is an argument you are better off not knowing. A child explaining their code to an adult who genuinely does not understand it is doing real work: sequencing, defining terms and finding their own gaps. Learn alongside them.
Are music grades worth doing?
They are a genuine external qualification from an outside body, which is useful on a home educated record where most other evidence is parent assessed. They also give structure and a deadline. Whether that suits your child is a separate question, and plenty of good musicians never take one.
