Home education maths: teaching it well when you were bad at it

Maths is the subject home educating parents worry about most, partly because it is genuinely sequential and partly because a lot of adults carry an old injury from their own maths education. Two separate problems live in that worry: not knowing the content, and not knowing how to teach it. They have different solutions.

The sequence matters more than the method

Maths is the one subject where order is not negotiable. You cannot do fractions without secure division. You cannot do algebra without secure number. Gaps do not stay put, they compound quietly for two years and then look like a sudden collapse. The rough order that works: number and place value, the four operations, times tables and number bonds to fluency, fractions, decimals and percentages as three faces of the same thing, ratio and proportion, then algebra, geometry and data.

Times tables gate more than people realise

A child who has to work out 7 times 8 in the middle of a long division problem has spent their working memory on recall and has nothing left for the method. That is why fluency matters, and it is the commonest hidden cause of a child who suddenly cannot do maths in Year 6. Practise the specific facts they do not have, daily and briefly, rather than reciting whole tables including the ones already secure. There are fewer unknown facts than it looks: commutativity halves the grid, and the 1, 2, 5 and 10 tables are rules rather than facts.

What to do when your child is stuck

  1. Find out whether it is the method or the number facts. Redo the same problem with easy numbers. If it works, the method is fine and the arithmetic was the obstacle.
  2. Go concrete. Counters, blocks, a number line, folded paper for fractions. Concrete understanding is not a childish stage to rush past.
  3. Go back a step, further than feels necessary. Most stuck points come from something two topics earlier that was never secure.
  4. Say it a different way rather than louder. Repeating the identical explanation more slowly is the commonest thing parents do and it almost never works.

Your maths anxiety is contagious and travels faster than the maths. Saying I was never any good at this either is meant as solidarity and lands as permission to give up.

Little and often beats a long session

Fifteen to twenty minutes of maths most days beats an hour twice a week, because retention depends on spacing. It is also easier to protect a short session on a bad day, which means it actually happens.

Common questions

What if I cannot do the maths myself?

Learn it a day ahead. It genuinely makes you a better teacher of it, because you have just found the confusing parts confusing yourself. Beyond a certain level, usually mid GCSE, most families bring in a tutor for the exam subjects, and that is a normal and sensible thing to plan for.

Is a maths scheme or textbook worth buying?

A sequential scheme is worth having for the ordering alone, especially if you are unsure what comes next. What you often do not need is the full package with its own manipulatives and teacher guides, and second hand copies of good schemes are widely available.

How do I know if my child has a gap?

Give them something from a year or two earlier and watch. Gaps show up as hesitation and finger counting on things that should be automatic, not as wrong answers on hard questions. Diagnose narrowly, fill the specific gap, and move on rather than restarting the whole topic.
