Home education science without a laboratory

Science at home worries parents for two reasons: no laboratory, and the sense that it is a subject you either know or you do not. Neither is as much of an obstacle as it feels, though the second one becomes real around GCSE.

What science actually is at primary level

Primary science is not a body of facts to transmit. It is the habit of noticing something, asking why, having a guess, and finding a way to check. A child who does that with mud, ice and plants has learned more science than one who memorised the parts of a flower. Almost all of it happens with things you already own. Cooking is chemistry. Baking is chemistry with a time limit. A garden is biology. Bicycles are forces. Cold weather is states of matter. The kitchen sink is more useful than a kit.

Structure it, or you will circle biology forever

Interest-led science drifts towards animals and space, because those are the interesting bits, and physical sciences quietly vanish. This is the commonest gap in home educated science and it is worth watching for deliberately.

Practical work when exams are coming

Private candidates generally cannot complete school controlled assessments, which is a large part of why home educated teenagers sit IGCSEs, where practical requirements are often assessed by written paper instead. Check the specification of the exact specification you intend to sit before you plan two years of work. Doing real practical work anyway is still worth it, because the written practical questions assume you have handled apparatus and know why a result was inconsistent.

The most useful science habit you can teach is the willingness to say I do not know, let us find out. It is also the most transferable, and children spot bluffing immediately.

Documentaries, and their limit

Good documentaries are genuinely educational and worth logging. Their limit is that watching something explained is not the same as being able to explain it. Ask them to tell you afterwards, or draw it, and you convert passive watching into something that sticks.

Is it a problem if we only do biology?
